Speak French like a local,
Bridge the culture gap…
Enjoy life with the locals.

(not just next to them 😊)

Bonjour, I’m Valentin. I was in the best position I could hope for as a French teacher… and yet, I wanted to quit every day. Watch the video to learn why.

Why learn French with me, in 10 seconds:

😊 Feel comfortable — learn with a French native who’s been in your shoes, as an expat and as a language learner.

🧠 Waste no time — learn as efficiently as possible thanks to a science-based method that is specifically designed for the way your English-speaking brain works.

🥂🍷Get the jokes — learn culture, not just language, so you can go beyond making grammatically correct sentences, and actually connect with the locals.

In a nutshell,
French That Makes Sense would make your life in France completely headache-free… if it wasn't for nights out with too much wine.

What it’s like to have French lessons with me

My learners JP & Brad went above and beyond and made this lovely video to help you get a feel of what lessons with me are like:

Sometimes, French is like cheese in a tube…

It doesn’t make any sense.

When people speak, it sounds like one single, really long word and it feels near impossible to make out individual words.

So you go to a French class, where you get plenty of decent information… but no reliable system to remember it.

But figuring out how you’re going to remember the info you’re given in class is your job, right?

So you plough through anyway, and when you finally wrap your head around a new grammar rule… you realise it comes with 34 exceptions.

old french grammar book

the work of the devil, no doubt

But French is hard, c’est la vie, right? …Right?‍

So you keep calm & carry on, you eat your veggies, you learn that joyless list of vocabulary…

Then, when you speak, people look at you like you’re from another solar system — because you were taught textbook French. 🤷‍♂️

So you have to do it all over again to speak the way the locals actually speak. Gosh.

‘Time to do it like we do — time to say MERDE. 🙊

Say MERDE to
“French is hard, that’s just the way it is”

French is indeed hard when you get a teaching methodology that doesn’t work for you.

Good teaching makes you feel empowered.

French That Makes Sense is much more than just private classes:

Waste no time, or money — French That Makes Sense is a complete learning service, with everything you need to make fast progress.

  • 📚💡Written Grammar Guides

Live interaction time is precious — let’s not waste it with endless lecturing. When a long explanation is needed, I write it down and send it to you. That way, you can read it in your own time, with a fresh mind.

Plus, the guides are written for humans, not grammarians!

  • 📝📲 Bite-Sized Practice Material

Don’t waste time learning things and not knowing how to make them stick — after each class, I send you bite-sized practice material that I personally create from the content of our conversations. Thanks to the brain science it’s based on, you’ll become able to remember everything you learn reliably, in just ten minutes of practice a day!

  • ☕️💬 Weekly One-to-One Classes Online

Learning efficiently is about focusing on the right things. Thanks to the two previous points, we can focus on what really matters during classes: live practice. You’ll get much more of it than in most private classes and, because sessions are online by design, you don’t need to commute — one hour of your time = one hour of learning!

I asked my learners what made their lessons special… 3 things kept coming back:

  1. A Science-Based Method

Waste no time with ineffective methods — my approach is rooted in the latest research in cognitive linguistics and neuroscience. La vie is too short for pseudoscience and educational fads!

  • You’ll get language practice in French, of course, but grammar explanations in English, so you can actually understand your lessons. My methodology connects the dots between French and English, so you gain an intuitive and practical understanding of how French works… without having to learn Grammar Jargon as a third language.

The science: Researchers have long argued that banning the learner’s own language in the classroom “has little to do with pedagogical principles or scientific research”. Neuroscience confirm that, as this article from Cambridge University shows. More scientific references.

  • Thanks to a cocktail of simple techniques backed by neuroscience, go beyond memorising words: develop your intuition, so you can speak French without thinking and with no hesitation. Say bye to awkward pauses in the middle of conversations! The same techniques are used by all sorts of people who are serious about learning efficiently, from the US military to Jeopardy! winners.

The science: The learning & memorising techniques that are most commonly used in schools are largely a waste of time, as this article from The NY Times reports. On the other hand, the combination of “Retrieval Practice” and “Spaced Repetition” has long been known to researchers and learning maestros to be the most efficient way to learn. Scientific references.

  • Jo G.

“Valentin’s memory training exercises have made me much more fluid when speaking French. I don’t fumble about looking in the darkest, deepest corners of my brain for the right words; they just come to me naturally.”

  • Annie Cogan-Thomas

“Lessons with Valentin have completely changed my approach to learning language. He is an expert in techniques of memory and recall. He clearly has a vast understanding of the psychology involved in what it takes to learn a language. This i found immensely helpful, as i had previously wasted lots of time learning things but not understanding how to make them stick.”

  • Yasmin Mehanna

“He is well-educated about learning theories and the learning process, and he is always trying to apply these during his lessons. As a result, besides the language skills, the courses helped me rethink how I see my ability to learn languages, which was the biggest benefit I took during that time. I completely owe this to Valentin.”

2. Learn culture, not just language

“The person who learns language without learning culture risks becoming a fluent fool” -Milton J. Bennett.

Go beyond making grammatically correct sentences — you’ll learn about French culture so you can actually connect with the locals, get the jokes, and know exactly which kind of cheese to bring to the neighbourhood party.

I’ve been in your shoes: I’ve been an expat and a language learner. That enables me to meet you where you are and teach in a way that makes sense to you. (and that, too, is backed by science)

  • Rebecca Hampton

“He has a unique way of teaching by relating his experiences of learning English with your own experience of learning French, which helped make understanding language structure so much easier!”

  • Owain Greaves

“One of the biggest benefits of learning from Valentin is his fantastic understanding of the english language and British culture, meaning he could understand why I made the mistakes I did and direct me into a french way of thinking when speaking. He also understands how to gently introduce french culture to enhance the learning experience. I couldn't recommend highly enough.”

  • Mel Hamilton

“Valentin takes the time to give extra tips on how to learn a language and the meaning of language, as well as the vocabulary and grammar that you would expect from French lessons. This made such a difference for me personally and has really inspired a wider understanding of the French language and culture.”

3. A safe space to make mistakes and grow

The grading system in school inadvertently taught us to see mistakes as a source of shame. Yet, making mistakes is the surest sign that you’re stepping out of your comfort zone, and thus actually learning!

I help you become comfortable with making mistakes, because that’s the best way for you to stop making them. In the words of Irish novelist & learner of French Samuel Beckett: Fail, fail again, fail better!

  • John-Paul Tier

“With no judgment, Valentin makes it safe to take risks. Beyond listening to what I say, he hears how I’m thinking and feeling.”

  • Annie Cogan-Thomas

“he is the most patient , attentive and caring teacher you could ever ask for. He taught me not to say 'sorry' when i have made a mistake and he corrects me, but to say ‘thank you' as he would always remind me that making mistakes is a great way to learn. I absolutely loved our lessons and they were the highlight of the week.”

  • Laura & Matt Leach

Laura: “I was worried that I would feel awkward during one-on-one sessions but Valentin has really put us at ease. He sees mistakes as a way to learn the language better. He takes time to explain any issues and questions we have about the French language. The sessions go beyond “just learning French” to really understanding the language. It has been such a positive experience, and our one-hour class literally flies by each week.”

How would it feel to live your life in France without worrying about French?

How would it feel to never, ever have a Frenchie switch to broken English for you?

How about chatting in French with your friends… without getting a headache afterwards?

Or being able to breeze through French daily life and understand the damn gas bill without it ruining your Sunday afternoon?

And to actually understand the store employee’s answer to your question, instead of just nodding & smiling? (Definitely my favourite technique from when I was learning English).

Is that too much to ask?

Of course not. With a learning method that works for you, it’s perfectly within reach. (Apart from “breezing through” French bureaucracy. This stuff is easy for nobody, not even us French. I regularly have waking-up-sweaty-at-3am nightmares about l’Administration Française… Still, it could be a lot easier for you).

So how do I make it easy for you to stop worrying about French?

 1. I start by getting to know you, what you need, what your goals are — so I know what to prioritise. We’ll do that through a free call when you get in touch.

2. Then, I prepare a class tailored to your needs. All you have to do is show up, do your best and make mistakes (yes, you heard that right).

3. After each class, you receive Intuition Trainers on your phone and, when necessary, a written Grammar Guide. That way, you know exactly what to do between classes to make steady progress, and it only takes a few minutes a day!

By the end of our time together, you’ll be able speak French without thinking about it, your (slight) accent won’t bother you anymore, the French won’t seem as weird… and you’ll develop an insatiable craving for stinky cheese.

In short, by the end of our time together, you’ll be able to focus on what really matters.

If you’re ready to spend more time on red wine than on red tape…

If you’re ready to grab a drink with friends instead of a grammar book alone…

...to go from stumbling through French sentences to effortlessly taking part in the conversations you want…

If you’re ready to connect with people, get the jokes, have more meaningful interactions, and lead a glorious, headache-free life of eating countless croissants and never putting on weight…

Then come on in.

Because let’s be honnête: French isn’t going to magically upload to your brain just because you live in France… and ancient grammar-teaching methodologies that feature cryptic hieroglyphs aren’t going to be of much help either!

Who’s this for?

Adults of all ages and all levels of French — I tailor the lessons to your situation and needs. Since my methodology is specifically designed for English speakers, you must be native (or be so fluent that you routinely think in English).
